Welcome To The Drones For Kids and Teens Blog

The #1 youth drone STEM summer program for kids, teens and high school students using drones in and out of the classroom

The Drobots Company started this blog to help inform, update and educate parents and students alike. We want kids and teens to be more engaged with drone technology as well as STEM education all together.

We are strong believers that students learn best when they are able to to (a) get outside and away from the computer (b) spark their internal curiosity through both mind and body in a STEM application and (c) create! Drones for kids and teens was specifically designed to open the door into both the present and the future. Fly away with us as we continue to educate students all over the world to both the application and usefulness of drones and how this technology will have an impact on how kids, teens and high school students to create, to think, and to solve.

Get Away From That Electronic Device!

Where Technology Meets Fresh Air™

Today’s youth has a tendency to be joined at the hip to electronic devices, including TV. According to an article in the June 2017 issue of the journal Preventive Medicine Reports, a combination of increased sedentary behavior (SB) and decreased physical activity places youth at an increased risk for becoming overweight or obese. On average, children and adolescents spend eight hours per day engaging in SB. Children who watch TV for more than three hours a day have a 65% higher chance of being obese compared to children who watch less than one hour of TV per day.

Various features within the home and neighborhood can contribute to children’s SB. Children’s access to TVs may vary based on the location of the device throughout the house as well as parental rules regarding viewing time. The presence of a TV, computer, or video game device in the child’s bedroom increases SB (Tandon et al., 2014; Tandon et al., 2012; Maitland et al., 2013; Atkin et al., 2013). Although, multiple studies have compared parental rules to physical activity behavior, few have examined SB as the outcome variable (Crawford et al., 2010). Rules concerning safety (e.g. “stay close/within sight of the house/parent”) and electronic usage (e.g. “no more than two hours of TV per day”) are examples of what previous studies have assessed (Tandon et al., 2014; Tandon et al., 2012; Spurrier et al., 2008). One study found that rules limiting electronic media usage significantly decreased SB by roughly 8 min per day, and significantly decreased screen time by nearly 38 min per day (Tandon et al., 2014).

Drobots Company was originally founded by a small group of parents, educators, visionaries and do-it-yourself engineers. The mission was and still is to inspire students to reduce time in front of a computer screen and instead utilize drone technology in a setting that promotes collaborative project-based learning in a positive educational environment. Hence, the company trademark slogan, Where Technology Meets Fresh Air™.

The primary goal of any Drobots Company program is to mentor participants on how to become lifelong learners and instill a strong sense of curiosity, confidence and teamwork. Due to the exponential growth of the drone industry, kids and teens may now explore, learn and evolve along with the applications of today and the discoveries of tomorrow. Drobots fosters this new technological landscape with a unique curriculum and well-trained positively motivated instructors.

The Edible Drone Can Save 50 Lives

Every Sale of This Edible Pouncer Drone Can Save 50 Lives

Migel Gifford makes drones with a difference. His humanitarian UAV, the Pouncer, is designed to deliver food aid in disaster zones – by being edible itself. That may sound unlikely, but Gifford, 70, has a history of succeeding with unconventional projects. He’s the Somerset-based engineer behind Aquila, the Wi-Fi-beaming drone bought by Facebook in 2014 to connect 1.6 billion humans to the internet.

In 2010, Gifford imagined Aquila (originally named Ascenta) as a high-altitude drone that could be used to beam internet or mobile-phone connectivity to civilians below.

“I absolutely believed in what we were doing; I could see how this could be a major benefit in communications applications,” he says. The UAV was designed with solar panels that would give it enough power to stay airborne for 90 days, with a flexible central section that could adapt to securely carry any cargo.

The call from Facebook dramatically changed Ascenta’s fate. It bought the drone for a reported $20 million (£16 million). Now with an enlarged wingspan the size of a commercial airliner, Aquila made its first successful flight – a 96-minute cruise above Yucca, Arizona – on June 28, 2016. Gifford is delighted: “For what it started out as and has now become, it’s super.”

Will Gifford sell this drone, like Ascenta? “We have the vision; we want to take it through to development,” he says. But any partnership allowing the Pouncer to be rapidly deployed would be a priority. “The key is getting the Pouncer used for humanitarian aid,” he says. “If this existed now it would be saving lives in Syria.”

The FDNY Is Now Using A Drone To Fight Fires

Drones Fighting Fires in NYC

For the first time in its history, the FDNY used a remote-controlled drone to help extinguish a burning building in New York City.

According to an FDNY spokesperson, the eight-pound drone was used to help emergency responders get a better look at a 4-alarm blaze that broke out at roughly 6:20 p.m. Monday night on the top floor of a residential building near the corner of Crotona Park North and Arthur Avenue in the Bronx. 168 firefighters responded to the scene, and two suffered minor injuries as they worked to extinguish the blaze.

“We were able to get a good view of the roof, which allowed the Incident Commander on the ground to view the firefighters as they were conducting rooftop operations, venting the roof and putting water on the fire,” Director of FDNY Operations Center Timothy Herlocker told the NY Post.

Drones Saving Lives – Check This Out, Zipline Drone Blood Deliveries

Drones Are Saving Lives

Drone based blood delivery truly demonstrates the medical application of drones and the fact that these are devices that actually can have a wide range of different benefits, including life-saving benefits.

Blood transfusions have been life-saving simple procedures for over a century now. However, in many parts of the world, just getting the blood to everyone involved has been very difficult. In areas like Rwanda, the simple problems with the roads and the infrastructure have made it difficult for people to reliably deliver blood, even in the case of emergencies. Obviously, responding to some of these problems with infrastructure would be the ideal solution. However, people can literally get around the problem with flying drones these days.

Given the speed at which the Zipline drones can travel, it should be that much easier to get blood to all of the necessary locations long before all of the resources expire.

Flying Drones Are The Future For Flying Cars

Flying Drones Are The Future For Flying Cars

Project Vahana aims to transport people in a helicopter-style, autonomous vehicle capable of shuttling several riders. The company hopes to have the vehicle available for short-haul trips by 2021 – which means a fully functional prototype should be ready by 2017

We live in a time where Level 5 autonomous cars are close to becoming a reality, and more than one company is working towards bringing humans to Mars. Consider all this, it’s almost surprising that flying cars haven’t taken to the skies yet. But it turns out we may not have to wait too long: Airbus is planning to test a prototype, not only for a flying car but an autonomous flying car.

Airbus Using Drones To Inspect Airplanes

Airbus Is Using Drones to Inspect Airplanes

Drones are potentially dangerous to commercial airplanes if they happen to collide. But in some cases, drones can also be helpful to planes and the companies that make them.

Airbus showed off this week at the Farnborough International Airshow in England how it uses drones to inspect airplanes.

The aircraft manufacturer outfitted the drone with a camera so it could take pictures of one of its airplanes and look for scratches, dents, and other damages. Airbus can then use those images to construct a 3D digital model of the plane that the company said can help prevent and reduce additional airplane damage.

Students’ STEM Projects Show Jersey City Needs More Trees, Bats

Students’ STEM Projects Show Jersey City Needs More Trees, Bats

Students at School 28 here are searching for ways to improve the environment in their hometown, and their work is getting state and national recognition. More than 40 middle school students in the Heights pitched their latest STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) projects to their classmates, teachers and sponsors on Thursday afternoon.

But their projects aren’t your average grade-school science projects: a group of eighth-graders are using drones to map out every tree in Jersey City while sixth-grade students are developing a a fishing pole for blind students to use.

“This is science, but I think this a cool kind of science,” 13-year-old Ryan Nitschke said while holding his group’s drone.
Team D.R.O.N.E. — Drones Recording Our Natural Environment — was just named a first round winner for the national Lexus Eco Challenge competition. The students, Nitschke, Samantha Cuevas, Dianna Carreon, Fritz Perera, and Daniel Rivera, have already won $10,000 and are beginning to collect data for the February round two deadline.

As part of their project, the eighth-graders use 360-degree-angle cameras attached to their drones to collect images of Jersey City’s trees. With data and research they have collected, they estimate only 17 percent of the city’s land is marked with trees.

Amazon’s Drones: Who’s Laughing Now?

Amazon’s Drones: Who’s Laughing Now?

In December 2013, Jeff Bezos prompted a few smiles from the journalists interviewing him on CBS’s 60 minutes when he announced that he was working on a project to use drones to send Amazon customers their purchases, adding that he expected the service to be available within four or five years. Few people believed him, and many dismissed his comments as a publicity stunt.

Yesterday, just three years after that fateful interview, Jeff Bezos announced that his company was already using drones to send some purchases to Amazon customers in the Cambridge area of the United Kingdom, and posted videos and photographs showing that his supposedly “crazy idea” was now a reality and greatly improved. The design of drones has improved notably, they are fully autonomous, and able to read their environment to avoid accidents and collisions.

Unable to overcome the objections of the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA), the company moved its research to the outskirts of London, keeping its projects in the United States going, while setting up new ones in Austria and Israel. Bezos has made it clear that if nations want to attract technology, research, jobs and create new economies, they will have to adapt quickly.

In just three years, Amazon has gone from an announcement dismissed by many people to sending real packages to real and paying customers. The speed at which technology evolves can still surprise us, taking us from incredulity to reality within astonishingly short time frames

Apple Betting On Drones To Make Maps Better?

Apple Betting On Drones To Make Maps Better?

According to Bloomberg, the company is reportedly planning to use drones to quickly update Maps with fresh data, like road conditions, street sign changes, and construction updates, and other information that car cameras would have difficulty photographing.

Last fall, Apple applied for permission from the Federal Aviation Administration to fly its drones for commercial purposes, back when that was restricted. Now the FAA has guidelines in place for commercial drones, but the rules prevent companies from flying drones over buildings or people.

Apple isn’t just trying to beat Google at its own outdoor mapping game. The company is also trying to compete with indoor mapping, which would let you use your iPhone to find your way around large, busy buildings like airports and museums. The technology comes courtesy of indoor mapping startup Indoor.io, which Apple bought last year.

Apple has been interested in indoor location-tracking for years, using the iBeacon protocol with indoor positioning to allow venues to send notifications when you’re near a physical Bluetooth touchstone (and have Bluetooth turned on with the venue’s app installed). We saw this in action with MLB’s At the Ballpark app at Citi Field, home of the New York Mets, back in 2013.

Google Maps already offers indoor maps, and it’s unclear if Apple’s will be more sophisticated or simply on par with the competition. Either way, Apple’s rumored Maps upgrades are significant, and a sign that Tim Cook and co. really are betting big on services—even ones that don’t contribute outright to the company’s bottom line.

The Flying Sensor Network That Could Save Our Planet – Drones

The Flying Sensor Network That Could (Finally!) Save Our Planet

Surveillance drones don’t have to be creepy. They can also help protect endangered animals and their habitats.

Sea Shepherd got its first drone in 2011 — a fixed wing aircraft donated by a recycling plant in New Jersey. They planned to use the drone to film for their show on the Animal Planet channel, but it immediately became apparent how useful a remotely operated aircraft was in waging Sea Shepherd’s particular kind of war. It was easier and safer to use than the manned helicopter on board. It could fly in foggy weather without imperiling lives. Maybe most important, it allowed Sea Shepherd to more easily gather footage — evidence of what they say is illegal activity.

Ever since they got that first drone, except for one year, the Japanese whalers have succeeded in catching less than one-third of their quota, Paul Watson, Sea Shepherd’s founder, told me.

“It’s already proven to be quite revolutionary,” Watson told me. He’s since outfitted all the organization’s ships with drones. And he’s thinking about getting rid of his helicopters. “The only way to combat is to have the best technology we can deploy,” Watson said. “So far, this is the best.”

Welcome to wildlife conservation in the 21st century. Drones have changed warfare. They’ve transformed cinematography (and peeping tommery). If Amazon gets its way, they may soon disrupt package delivery. And now, the conservation community is abuzz with the potential of drones — of unmanned aircraft to fight poachers, monitor wildlife and help with basic biology research, like counting birds.

Drones have surveyed orangutan habitats in Borneo, watched over rhinos in South Africa, and herded elephants in Kenya — to keep them away from areas where they’re likely to get shot. Elephants don’t have much to fear in the wild, except, of course, poachers. But they loathe drones, whose whirring propellers mimic the sound of bees. And elephants happen to be terrified of bees. There’s even talk of arming drones with pellets of capsaicin, the hot stuff in chili peppers, to better herd animals.

To the degree that drones really can help save wildlife, they’re arriving none too soon — especially for the endangered species that are frequent targets of poaching. Poaching of wildlife has accelerated alarmingly in the past decade. During that time, the killing of rhinos increased fifty-fold, according to the World Wildlife Fund. By one estimate from a few years ago, three elephants are killed every hour in Africa.
