Welcome To The Drones For Kids and Teens Blog

The #1 youth drone STEM summer program for kids, teens and high school students using drones in and out of the classroom

The Drobots Company started this blog to help inform, update and educate parents and students alike. We want kids and teens to be more engaged with drone technology as well as STEM education all together.

We are strong believers that students learn best when they are able to to (a) get outside and away from the computer (b) spark their internal curiosity through both mind and body in a STEM application and (c) create! Drones for kids and teens was specifically designed to open the door into both the present and the future. Fly away with us as we continue to educate students all over the world to both the application and usefulness of drones and how this technology will have an impact on how kids, teens and high school students to create, to think, and to solve.

Drone Rodeo at CES, The Fastest Pilots Race For Aerial Supremacy

Drone Rodeo at CES, The Fastest Pilots Race For Aerial Supremacy

Roughly 45 minutes from the Las Vegas strip, amid the sprawling sands and sparse flora of the desert, lies the Aerodrome, the premier location for drone enthusiasts to come and learn how to fly. It’s a place where drone pilots can fly without fear of breaking regulations. For years now, when CES rolls around, drone crowds descend on the aerodrome for the Drone Rodeo, an event where manufacturers can show off the latest in drone technology, where hobbyists can learn all about the next generation of drones, and perhaps most impressively, where drone racers flaunt their skills in dazzling displays of drone maneuvering.

That new technology should excite maverick drone racers who feel the need for speed. This year, according to Kroll, “We’ve got a couple of folks that are proclaiming to have the fastest production racing drone in the world right now.”

Drone racers may have competition in the future — from the drones themselves. Among the trends in the drone world in 2018 is the development of autonomous drones. “One of the things that’s been difficult,” Kroll said, “is to develop an indoor autonomous flying drone that can learn as it flies, and learn its surroundings as it flies.”

Drone Rescues Two Teenage Swimmers in Choppy Surf

Drone Rescues Two Teenage Swimmers in Choppy Surf

We’re always eager to recognize the heroes who risk their lives to save others, but the hero in this story isn’t interested in our praise. Drones, after all, aren’t particularly moved by flattery or gratitude, but they are useful when it comes to saving swimmers in Australia. As originally reported by The Sydney Morning Herald, a drone played the role of levitating lifeguard and saved two swimmers who were struggling against heavy surf in New South Wales.

The dramatic rescue took place on Thursday, January 18,  and represents the first application of drone technology to protect swimmers. Drones were initially introduced to coastal lifeguards when the NSW government pledged $16 million to a shark-mitigation strategy. But clearly, the drones have additional uses as well.

The two distressed swimmers managed to get a distress signal to NSW lifeguards, and it just so happened the supervisor Jai Sheridan (the 2017 NSW Lifeguard of the Year) was controlling the drone. Sheridan responded immediately, flying the unmanned aerial vehicle to the swimmers’ location within minutes, and deployed help. The drone dropped a flotation device into the water, helping the teenage swimmers.

As Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW John Barilaro said, “It’s quite incredible to see that the NSW Government’s investment in this technology has already resulted in two people having their lives saved.”

Drone-Based Automatic External Defibrillators for Sudden Death?

Drone-Based Automatic External Defibrillators for Sudden Death?

Public access defibrillation programs can improve survival after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, but automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are rarely available for bystander use at the scene. Drones are an emerging technology that can deliver an AED to the scene of an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest for bystander use. We hypothesize that a drone network designed with the aid of a mathematical model combining both optimization and queuing can reduce the time to AED arrival.

We applied our model to 53 702 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests that occurred in the 8 regions of the Toronto Regional RescuNET between January 1, 2006, and December 31, 2014. Our primary analysis quantified the drone network size required to deliver an AED 1, 2, or 3 minutes faster than historical median 911 response times for each region independently. A secondary analysis quantified the reduction in drone resources required if RescuNET was treated as a large coordinated region.

The region-specific analysis determined that 81 bases and 100 drones would be required to deliver an AED ahead of median 911 response times by 3 minutes. In the most urban region, the 90th percentile of the AED arrival time was reduced by 6 minutes and 43 seconds relative to historical 911 response times in the region. In the most rural region, the 90th percentile was reduced by 10 minutes and 34 seconds. A single coordinated drone network across all regions required 39.5% fewer bases and 30.0% fewer drones to achieve similar AED delivery times.

An optimized drone network designed with the aid of a novel mathematical model can substantially reduce the AED delivery time to an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest event.

Drones Could Soon Deliver Blood To Hospitals

Drones could deliver blood to hospitals

PALO ALTO, CA (KGO/CNN) – A California city could be the first in the U.S. to use drones to deliver blood. Drones are already being used in Switzerland to deliver blood from one medical facility to another. The company behind it is Matternet located in Menlo Park, CA. The company’s video shows how blood or medical samples can be put into a box, and with a push of a button, flown autonomously by a drone.

Stanford Blood Center is interested in the technology. “We’ll use a drone to deliver blood from Stanford Blood Center about 3.5 miles to Stanford Hospital down the road,” said Tho Pham, the medical director for the Stanford Blood Center. It can take 30 minutes to one hour to transport blood from the Blood Center to Stanford Hospital. Using a drone to deliver, would take 10 minutes.

The delivery would be dropped at a receiving station that would be located in a hospital parking lot or area convenient for medical staff to access. “With a system like this, you’re able to save tremendous amount of time and generally reduce waste throughout the hospital system,” said Matternet’s CEO Andreas Rappopoulous.

Palo Alto’s city manager said they’ve submitted their application and are excited the pilot program could potentially happen in what is considered the birthplace of Silicon Valley.

“We saw it as a really opportune moment for us to be in potentially on the front end of developing policies that could affect cities in the future,” said city manager James Keene.

If approved, doctors said the drones would be used to fly blood in emergencies, where time is critical, and they don’t have enough staff to transport supplies quickly.

How Drones Are Helping Washington’s Moose

How Drones Are Helping Washington’s Moose

Through the trees, it’s hard to see the moose wandering in the woods. But from a bird’s eye view? You can see a little brown splotch — with antlers. Researchers found drones — that sound like a swarm of bees — don’t scare the moose.

Before this technology, researchers had to trek through dense forests to count moose — or fly in helicopters.

Hiking in and trying to get a glimpse of a mother moose and her calf is challenging. It’s also stressful to the animals. Wolves and other predators chase them on the ground.

“When we walk in on a moose, and it hears us coming, it’s gone. It’s in the next valley,” Goerz said. “It’ll move hundreds of meters away, if not farther, to get away from us.”

The researchers found drones — that sound like a swarm of bees — don’t scare the moose.

“I would love to see us be able to use them for the kinds of survey flights that we typically do with helicopters now,” Harris said. “I don’t anticipate that happening for a few years at least. … We can only go at the speed that state and federal regulatory bodies permit us to go.” But using drones instead of helicopters could be safer for people, less expensive for the agency, and could create less stress for wildlife below, Harris said.

From the sky this month, the researchers saw a radio-collared female moose with her baby moving across the hillside. Later, the drone allowed them to spot five bulls; with their eyes the researchers only saw one. “It just goes to show that we don’t see everything,” Goerz said. “When we think we know what’s going on, we only have a ground perspective. Once we put that drone into the air, we realized we weren’t seeing everything.”

At an Air Show in China, Drones, Not Jets, Are the Stars

At an Air Show in China, Drones, Not Jets, Are the Stars

At the World Fly-In Expo, an air show held in the central Chinese city of Wuhan last month, jets, hot air balloons, autogiros and ultralight planes were upstaged by Chinese-made drones.

Remote-controlled flying machines drew crowds at exhibition booths and performed in tight formation, high above the ground. Teams in brightly colored jackets raced industrial drones and competed in events like delivering parcels and spraying plumes of mock pesticide.

But, is this a good thing? As D.J.I. courts more industrial customers such as utilities and developers, the company’s drones — and the vast quantities of footage taken by their cameras — have come under scrutiny.

Drones in China inspect power lines, survey fires and disaster zones, spray crops, and monitor air pollution around factories. In some remote areas, they have delivered packages. Online retailers and logistics companies are aiming to expand drone deliveries by signing more agreements with local governments.United States customs officials said in a memo this year that D.J.I.’s drones were sending sensitive information about American infrastructure back to China. The report, from the Los Angeles office of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement bureau, cited an unnamed source in the drone industry.

HOOK & FUR: Drones Get A Try In Wildlife Management

HOOK & FUR: Drones Get A Try In Wildlife Management

Rich Harris, a WDFW wildlife scientist, said the goal of the project is to document the presence of moose calves more safely, more efficiently and less expensively than is possible with traditional wildlife surveying methods. By flying the drone over moose cows, researchers expect to be able to document the presence of nearby calves.

Harris said the only other ways to conduct such research – on foot or from a helicopter – are less safe, require more time, and are more expensive than using a drone. Also, the drone will be flown only during daylight hours at a maximum height of 400 feet and will not be flown over people or buildings. The flight schedule was chosen to avoid weekends and most major hunting seasons, which will minimize disturbance to people.

A New Drone Challenge Launched

A New Drone Challenge Has Been Launched In The UK

A new drone challenge has been launched in the UK that will work with five cities to explore if and how drone technology could be used to support local needs. The Flying High Challenge, run by innovation foundation Nesta together with Innovate UK, will consider how drones could assist cities with their emergency services, buildings maintenance, and traffic, environmental and pollution monitoring.

“By exploring uses with cities and how practically they would like to shape the integration of this technology, UK firms across the drone landscape–from platform and application developers to imaging and sensors manufacturers to autonomy and systems integrators–will have real-world situations through which to tailor their offerings,” he added.

Watch Out! Your Next Traffic Ticket May Come From A Drone

Working in Bordeaux in the southwest of France, police are using their multi-rotor eye in the sky to catch road users breaking the law. The trial started in the summer and since then its drones have led to the handing out of “hundreds” of fines for traffic violations Marketplace reports. The camera-equipped flying machines provide live-streams to police on the ground, allowing them to survey wide areas in the hunt for dodgy drivers. When they spot one, they use the drone’s camera to track the vehicle before sending in traffic cops to pull the driver over.

The report notes that while the technology is proving useful for pinpointing unsafe drivers, it doesn’t yet have the ability to detect vehicles breaking the speed limit, though roadside cameras can still take care of those kinds of violations. Those opposing the French police’s use of drones include Pierre Chasseray of the lobby group Forty Million Drivers, who fears that some motorists will now be taking their eyes off the road and looking skyward to see if they can spot one of the aerial surveillance machines. But the government is reportedly interested in expanding the system to other parts of the country.
