The first-ever off-Earth helicopter just hooked up with its traveling companion. Engineers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California, attached the tiny Mars Helicopter to the agency’s car-size Mars 2020 rover today (Aug. 28), agency officials announced. The duo will launch together in July 2020 and touch down inside the Red Planet’s Jezero Crater in February 2021. Once on Mars, the solar-powered, 4-lb. (1.8 kilograms) helicopter will detach and begin flying test sorties.

“Since our helicopter is designed as a flight test of experimental technology, it carries no science instruments,” she added. “But if we prove powered flight on Mars can work, we look forward to the day when Mars helicopters can play an important role in future explorations of the Red Planet.”

NASA plans to launch another rotorcraft soon as well — Dragonfly, which will soar through the thick atmosphere of Saturn’s huge moon Titan. The life-hunting Dragonfly is scheduled to lift off in 2026 and land on Titan’s frigid surface in 2034.

Imagine heading to a crowded beach and walking endlessly until you find the perfect spot for your family to camp out. You begin to unpack your bags only to realize you forgot to grab the sunblock. Do you make the long trip back to the car for it or do you risk sunburn for the entire family? What if you didn’t have to make that choice? What if you could simply use your phone to order sunblock and have it delivered directly to you by drone in less than 15 minutes?

This concept may seem far-fetched but a golf course in North Dakota is already experimenting with food delivery from its onsite restaurant to golfers via drone. The city of Reno, Nevada is evaluating the use of drones to deliver defibrillators to heart attack victims, so treatment can begin before paramedics arrive. Amazon is working towards being able to deliver products by drone in under 30 minutes with a pilot program in the U.K. 

You’re back on the beach, in Narragansett Bay as a matter of fact, where the population nearly doubles every summer. You’re craving a thirst-quenching drink and after clicking a few buttons on your phone, a drone promptly arrives with an ice-cold lemonade. A few feet away, a lifeguard is using a drone with the ability to deliver medical supplies to monitor the shore and ensure the safety of beach-goers. Near the beach entrance, a drone is monitoring vehicle traffic and issuing parking passes as open spots are taken. While it’s unlikely drones will be prominent in this way during the summer of 2019, the future holds many opportunities for Rhode Island and the rest of the U.S. to use this technology to revolutionize the way we as a society go about our everyday lives.

Before investing in the hardware, K–12 schools should take some basic steps to ensure their drone programs will get off the ground.

An increasing number of K–12 schools are bringing drones into the classroom as new use cases show how useful unmanned vehicles can be to teach science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics skills

While students are excited at the idea of flying robots in class, teachers will need support systems to learn how to incorporate the new technology into their lesson plans.

“It’s easy to attract students and hook them with the coolness of flying drones. The burden is on us to show them the career connection — that a drone is a tool and that many industries use it,” Duane Roberson, Colorado Springs School District 11‘s director of career and technical education and concurrent enrollment, told EdTech.

Kellogg reminds his students that they are at the forefront of cutting-edge technology, and that the technology offers a good career opportunity: “They understand that they have an opportunity to not only earn credit to graduate, but also to learn a career skill that comes with an industry-recognized certification. That looks great on a resume and makes them hirable.”

The next time you stop at your local grocery store for eggs and bread, don’t be surprised to see small drones scanning shelves. Austin-based retail-tech firm Pensa is testing a new system in select retailers to capture in-store, real-time data by launching drones to fly around store shelves. The data can be processed seamlessly by Pensa’s backend intelligent cloud.

“In our store pilots, we’ve conducted thousands of drone flights around real-world retail environments, and at the end of the day, people in the stores are pretty ho-hum. The drones barely garner a glance from most shoppers, most of the time,” Pensa CEO Richard Schwartz writes in a recent blog post.

“The Pensa drone doesn’t look like ‘a drone’ in the conventional sense most people expect. Several recent press articles described the Pensa drone as looking more like flying whiffle balls – a reference to the distinctive protective encasings around the drone’s four propellers.”

Schwartz adds, the unassuming look of the drone and its quiet flight profile rarely surprises shoppers and in fact, nearly half of the shoppers didn’t notice the drones. “People who noticed the drone treated it much as they would treat a store worker or a new machine.” The company has already trialed the system for Anheuser-Busch InBev’s IGA Extra Beck retailer in Montreal where drones completed more than 200 flights.

Drones are good for more than ferrying burgers to hungry golfers and snapping pics ready-made for social media, as it turns out. They’ve also been proposed for nuclear reactor inspection and used to detect signs of damage on wind turbines. In a newly published paper on the preprint server Arxiv.org (“Real-Time Dense Stereo Embedded in A UAV for Road Inspection“), scientists describe AI that can be embedded in a quadcopter for road inspection.

The frequent detection of different types of road damage, e.g., cracks and potholes, is a critical task in road maintenance,” the researchers wrote, noting that most inspections are still performed manually. “[M]anual visual inspection [is] not only tedious, time-consuming, and costly, but also dangerous for the personnel. Furthermore, the detection results are always subjective and qualitative because decisions entirely depend on the experience of the personnel … With recent advances in airborne technology, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with digital cameras provide new opportunities for road inspection.

The paper’s authors’ framework comprised a stereo vision system — an algorithm that extracted 3D depth information from images — that captured a reference view. Disparities between the reference image and real-time snaps of the road were used to produce a “disparity map,” which was fed into a mathematical function that made the damaged areas easier to spot.

A pioneering use of drones to fly blood samples across a North Carolina hospital campus launched Tuesday in the latest move to expand their roles in business and health care.

The short trips between WakeMed buildings in Raleigh mark the first time the Federal Aviation Administration has allowed regular commercial flights of drones carrying products, according to UPS and drone company Matternet, which partnered with the hospital on the program.

“This is a turning point, and it’s an historic moment because this is the first FAA-sanctioned use of a (drone) for routine revenue-generating flights,” Bala Ganesh, vice president of UPS’ advanced technology group, said in an interview before the announcement.

The FAA confirmed in a statement Monday that it hadn’t previously allowed drones to make routine commercial package deliveries, known as revenue flights. Others have flown drone deliveries as part of smaller-scale tests or demonstrations.

The WakeMed program will start by flying patients’ medical samples one-third of a mile (.5 kilometer) from a medical park to the main hospital building for lab testing at least six times a day five days a week, Matternet CEO Andreas Raptopoulos said in an interview. Vials of blood or other specimens will be loaded into a secure box and carried to a drone launching pad, where they will be fastened to the aircraft and flown to another building. He said the flights will technically be within sight of operators on either end of the route, and they are authorized to fly above people.

The aim is to cut down on the time it takes to transport the time-sensitive samples typically driven on the ground.

ABI Zero can conduct an aerial survey for as long as 10 minutes, and then return to its base station for charging. The base also serves as a WiFi-enabled link for receiving streaming data from the drone and relaying it to Vtrus’ cloud service.

Because Vtrus’ platform is designed exclusively for indoor use, it doesn’t have to satisfy the Federal Aviation Administration restrictions on outdoor flights of unmanned aerial systems. The company has been demonstrating its technology in a “pilotless” pilot program, and the newly-reported funding round should help Vtrus get further down the path to commercialization.

A SEC filing published today shows a $2.9 million cash infusion for Vtrus. Renato Salas-Moreno, the company’s CEO and co-founder, declined to comment on the new funding when contacted by GeekWire.

Salas-Moreno was previously the co-founder of Surreal Vision, a computer vision startup that was sold in 2015 to Oculus, Facebook’s VR subsidiary. He went on to work at Oculus VR for more than a year as a research scientist in Redmond, Wash., then helped lay the groundwork for Vtrus, which he launched in 2017 with chief technology officer Jonathan Lenoff and chief design officer Carlos Sanchez.

The company, based near Fishermen’s Terminal in Seattle’s Interbay neighborhood, has developed an indoor autonomous drone known as the ABI Zero that can navigate its way around the tricky surroundings of a warehouse environment without the need for a remote operator or GPS waypoints.

Movement And Breathing Breaks Help Students Stay Focused On Learning

For many kids, sitting still all day in school is a big challenge, which is why movement breaks are good practice, whether it’s in elementary school or high school. Additionally, learning science shows us that movement activates the brain and improves cognition.

“This idea of children sitting for long periods of time, they aren’t naturally wired to do that,” said Dr. Pamela Cantor, Founder and Chief Science Advisor of Turnaround for Children in an Edutopia video series on the science of learning. “So rather than put them in a position where they have to act out to demonstrate that they need to be able to move, building in movement breaks means that they will get some of the stress relief, some of the energy release that they need in order to be able to get calm again and pay attention to learning.”

And for students who come to school having experienced some form of trauma, movement is even more important.

“If we do have a certain percentage of kids with toxic stress, they have high amounts of cortisol and the way to release that is through physical movement,” said Cynthia Robinson-Rivers, head of school at Van Ness Elementary school in Washington, D.C.

Giving students a chance to exercise and move during the day will help them self-regulate during class time, but it can be difficult for kids to transition from high energy spaces to calmer spaces. Incorporating a simple mindfulness practice after lunch or at the start of the school day can help students calm down and prepare themselves to learn again.

Technology camps are a creative and inspiring way to expose children to a variety of real-world skills that will benefit them in the future. Not only will they be learning something new, but technology camps also allow children to explore areas of interest that they may not have experienced at home or at school.

In our current digital era, people of all ages use apps every day intrinsic to their ways of life in their daily lives. However, what is an app exactly? Why do people choose to build apps instead of websites? What does it take to build an app? What makes an app “great”? Beyond simply learning how to code, creating a mobile app also encourages children to foster skills in a variety of areas. Communication
